I am working in Marketing department in the field of Education, so I am busy as a bee on weekdays. A load of works is waiting for me to finish and complete at my company. A very tight deadline and things get intense whenever it ‘s approaching. So, I just spend 5 hours sleeping. At weekends, when I have nothing to do or worry about, I allow myself to sleep longer until 10 o’clock before I get out of my bed.
For young people, to have a good sleep is not a big problem. All they need to do is to eat or drink less caffeine, and importantly to have a warm, cozy and comfortable bedroom decorated with soothing and calm pop of color. It will enhance your quality of sleep, help people feel relaxed and sleep like a baby. Besides two factors mentioned above, for the elderly, silence is the main part of good sleeping quality. For that reason, we have to keep quiet as much as we can while the old members are sleeping.
Most of scientists agree that good sleep is extremely important for human health. It helps sleepers recharge battery, improve memory, eliminate negative thoughts and feel energetic, productive to begin a new day. Besides, sleep quality is also linked with body weight. People with short sleep duration tend to have a bigger appetite and eat more calories than the ones who sleep well. Thus, it probably causes overweight or seriously obesity, which results in poor athletic and physical performance. For those reasons, along with nutrition and exercise, good sleep is one of the pillars of health.
Normally, I hit the sack at around 2.00 AM and wake up at 7.00 A.M. If so, it takes me around 5 hours to sleep in. However, if I hang out with my friends, throw a party or something like that, I skipped sleeping and have fun until the next morning and ready to go to work. Don’t know why I have more energy like that.
Taking a nap is one of Vietnamese culture. After morning shift, we have lunch with each other around 15-30 minutes and start to take out our cushion/ pillow, put it under our desk, lay our head on & rest for 45 minutes. Though it’s just a short nap, it makes us feel better, ensure more energy for the afternoon, not to make our body feel sluggish. If I don’t, it seems like that I ruin the rest of my day.
In today’s fast-paced society, six or seven hours of sleep may sound pretty good. But for myself, I have developed a habit of sleeping in 5 hours per day and resting about 45 minutes in noon break for 3 years, I feel familiar with my habit and Ok with that. I don’t feel sleep-deprived; in contrast, I feel wide-awake and full of energy to fulfill my responsibility every day.
As far as I have known, not all of the elderly people find it easy to sleep long and sleep well. They are supposed to be lucky if they can remain 8-hour sleeping as scientists recommend at their age. For some people I have known, the more aging they get, the more difficult they find it to sleep. They may experience restless nights, have trouble to fall or stay asleep. Sometimes, they spend just only 2-3 hours sleeping, which is not enough to revive the body. Sadly, sleep deprivation may result in other problems later on.
I don’t think I will sleep well when it is noisy outside because I am a light sleeper. Only a little noise could wake me up while I am sleeping. For that reason, I always choose the quiet place to rest my eyes.
